The Breeders’ Cup travels around the United States, stopping at some of the best known and most historic horse-racing tracks in the country. This year, Del Mar in Southern California will play host to the event for the first time. Racing action begins on Friday, and you can tune in on NBCSN beginning at 5 p.m. ET (live stream) to watch the day’s four races.
The $1 million Juvenile Fillies Turf is scheduled for 5:25 p.m., the $1 million Las Vegas Dirt Mile for 6:05 p.m., the $1 million Juvenile Turf for 6:50 p.m., and the day’s highlight event, the $2 million Longines Distaff, will go to the gates at 7:35 p.m. All four races, and indeed all 13 during the two-day event, are Grade 1 stakes races.
The Longines Distaff, a 1-1/8-mile event on dirt for female horses ages 3 and up, will draw the most attention. After high-profile females Songbird and Beholder retired last year, eyes will be on 5-2 favorite Stellar Wind, ridden by jockey Victor Espinoza and trained by John Sadler. She’ll be making her final career start and finished fourth in the race last year. Elate (3-1), Forever Unbridled (4-1), and Abel Tasman (4-1) all look to be chief challengers. Abel Tasman won the Kentucky Oaks this year, and Elate is coming off a pair of Grade 1 victories. Forever Unbridled finished third in the Distaff last year when the Breeders’ Cup was held at Santa Anita.
